What is meant by eLearning?

eLearning refers to a broad range of activities that involve the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) to support and enhance learning. It includes the effective use of digital resources and learning tools, collaboration with colleagues and mentors in other locations, the experience of a virtual environment and access to online courses from home or within the community. It has the potential to provide learning content and with other learners in an interactive manner, and to realise their full potential educationally and personally. eLearning is also about innovation. It is about the tools we use today, but also the tools we cannot yet imagine - which we will be using tomorrow. Within a context of constant innovation and change, we have a responsibility to explore, research and extend the effective use of innovative ICT to support the development of authentic, new learning environments for all learners - at all stages of schooling. eLearning:
  • Allows for engaged, collaborative learning.
  • Enables learners to access environments, tools and resources - including other learners - at their own pace, in their own time and from wherever they might be.
  • Empowers learners with responsibility for their own learning experience.
  • Acts as a catalyst for authentic, meaningful learning experiences.
  • Offers powerful new possibilities for teacher professional development, student engagement and meaningful school/community integration.
Good e-Learning is more than just PowerPoint slides! It involves collaboration and interaction between and among learners. Collaborative tools add interest, facilitate engagement and build a sense of community. The great news is that many are free or almost free. Here are some different tools that can be used to help facilitate collaboration”
Chat—This allows number of people to interact live at once. Many programs include a chat, too, including the free Yahoo and MSN groups.
Webcams—Web cameras can add an interesting wrinkle to online collaboration. They can be used to broadcast information from experts and some providers offer video chat for free live AOL’s IM.
Phone conferencing—Conference calling provides a good opportunity for learners to hear each other and “humanize” the online experience. You organization may already have conference calling capabilities that you may be able to use for “free.”
Audio conferencing—Also known as VoIP or Voice Over Internet Protocol. It works like a conference call but is done online with a computer microphone.
Discussion boards—Many sites provide free discussion board software that you can use for educational exchange of information.
Wikis—these online tools allow people to not only post their own comments but to edit the comments of others.
Email—Many people fail to utilize the most ubiquitous online tool of all, many messages, ideas and concepts can be conveyed through email and learners already know how to use it.
