I have a terrific narrative writing guideline to help kids construct really interesting stories. I will bring it to our next Lit meeting to show everyone. After fairly ordinary spelling results in the AIM testing, I have been really working on targeting spelling in my whole group and small group writnig focuses. The kids have their own spelling lists and lately we've been having weekly spelling assessment tasks. It seems to be helping kids who continue to spell high frequency and common words incorrectly. Maybe we could revisit strategies we use in the classroom and share our knowledge of how to teach spelling more effectively?

I know this isnt about literacy, but i just wanted to thank trish and frank for showing us the footy finals game with maths 300. i played it today with my kids (somehow by chance i had exactly 16 kids at school, which made it easy to play in 2 groups) and the kids loved the game. We could have played it all afternoon. i showed them the program on maths 300 and they enjoyed that too. they are also keen to take a game board home to be able to play with their family.

On Wednesday Rebecca Lourey, and two West Warrnambool jstudents oined us in a half hour Skype chat.
Rebecca ran a get to know you activity, and then we tried to do a 'draw and talk 'activity where the kids could follow her instructions to draw a dog and a chicken. The kids had fun and learnt about the talk and draw feature in Skype. If you have not got the lastest version of Skype, (3.5) download it so you can try this too! Let me know if you'd like to do this with my class to give it a go. |

Yesterday Trish, Julie and I started to plan a transport unit for next term using the planner given by lesley form the PD. The unit will cover past, present and futre transport, so if anyone has any great resources that we might be able to used that would be helpful, websites or books they have seen that we could use.
While looking for stuff in teh internet, I came acorss this scope and sequence plan by Doveton North Primary School. If you check it out you wil lsee they use throughlines, essential questions, unit questions etc. http://www.dovetonnorth.vic.edu.au/scopeandsequence.htm |

Grade 5 are currently contributing to their story wiki with the 6 groups from West. They are discovering that it is important to use proper and polite language to communicate to people they don't know. e.g. Many have been a bit put out that the comments in their discussion page seem a bit gruff or rude.
We are Skyping with two Deakin students this week also. Beginning tomorrow, students will participate in a get to know you session with their student teacher, and several students from West. From there, students will be involved in ICT peer teaching via Skype and Wiki's. Should prove to be very useful and a lot of fun.

This PD was held at Cafe Regal last night, and was run by Anne Hammond who has extensive literacy knowledge and experience, and like Carmel Crevola, spoke briefly about her various experiences in schools in the Bronx in the US. I know meetings at the end of the day, and during a busy week are a bit of a put off, but this was well worth it. Anne reinforced the value and importance of a lot of the terrific things we are all doing in the Literacy block, such as Literature Circles, Role plays and partner reading. She spoke about the importance of Whole Group book talk, the value of reading outloud to kids in upper grades, including a short period of sustained silent reading a couple of times each week, share time, and how to make thinking visible. Anne provided examples of prompts that encourage children to ask questions in their head while reading, or being read-to. She pointed out that often we are the ones with the questions for the students, and the students are expected to answer those questions. Whether teaching in Prep or grade 6, Anne implored teachers to make explicit what they want children to think about when reading text or listening to a story. I know when doing whole group reading I don't often don't take opportunities to allow students to consider what they see, what they think, what they wonder and why. Anyway, we can discuss this further if anyone wishes, but the hand out (a very good read) will be in your pigeonholes soon....so do look out for it!

Well done P-6 staff and especially Marg, Ann and Jess for the fantastic P-6 ICT projects show cased on Monday. It was a great PR event and an eye opener to all involved. Its amazing to think how far we have all come! The skills and knowledge that our students have gained of the ever increasing technology resources available to them continually grows at break neck speed. The Grade 5 students had a brief reflection time after lunch, and without a doubt or dry eye, the grade 3/4 Photo Stories attracted the greatest interest!!!

I am assuming that other people have a life and won't be reading this till Monday 27th, so if you are, we have 7 more sleeps till the showcase. Please rehearse what you are planning to do. I will organise the library availability, the smartboard and morning tea. I will also working with Wendy's kids as WS won' t be here next monday. You can take as long as you like to share with the parents, what it is that you have been doing. take time to take questions and allow the kids to do most of the talking. I will be back tomorrow (Tuesday 28th). WE have 2 30gig video Ipods already purchased, so think of ways in which you can be creative using these.

Most children have now scanned their photos and inserted them into their photostories. Some kids are having trouble working out how to write their script. I am suggesting to do it as a "talking letter" to their Dad. Anyone got any other suggestions?

We will showcase this project as well as games we play on the smartboard and several children will discuss the benefits of having this technology in our room.

I just found a book over in the library that i thought might be useful for people like me that sometimes stuggle to think of interesting art lesson ideas. It is called "Express Yourself! Activities and Adventures in Expressionism" (759.06 RAI) It is colourful and easy to follow, with lesson ideas based on differnt artists from that time.
I have borrowed the book out at the moment, but if you would like to have a look at it, its sitting on my desk.

was planning on showing our gazza wiki for the showcase, i'll try and get some of the confident kids in my class to shw the different pages. by the time the date comes round gazza will be with the ogther school so hopefully we will have some info from them to show too.
I was wondering Marg, if you had some older kids that could help with putting a short video together for us, with the kids just saying a comment or something like that about the gazza experience. do you have kids that could put all the snippets of video comment together into one package?.....

This project is looking great. One student has recorded her voice over already and is looking at putting music behind her story. Many others have scanned their photos and are importing them into photo story, and the rest are still waiting on photos. Those kids who have imported their photos are required now to write a script before recording. The whole thing is looking good.
